The first Startup Weekend for the Gold Coast was run on July 19 to 21 at Silicon Lakes in Robina. Here are the results. Participation Over 140 people were involved in the weekend, either as participants, observers, mentors, judges, organisers, or volunteers. 32 ideas were pitched, and out of that 60+ people formed 9 teams, and all 9 teams made it through to present their startup for judging on the Sunday night (although some did pivot away from their original idea).

The possibilities afforded by 3D printing keep expanding. From spider robots to prosthetics for ducks, the sky seems to be the limit. Researchers at North Carolina State University have taken the technology one step further with the discovery of a method for printing liquid metal.
Startup Weekend is all about rapidly launching a new business, Silicon Valley style. It’s about bootstrapping, rapid prototyping, collaboration, customer validation, and most importantly, having fun. Last week, the Data Center of China Internet (DCCI) released a report (h/t Tech In Asia) that showed nearly 35 percent of the Android apps it surveyed were secretly stealing user data unrelated to the app’s functionality. The DCCI, a research institute, looked at 1,400 apps downloaded from different app markets and found that 66.9 percent were tracking users’ private data, with 34.5 percent collecting information that had no connection to the app’s usage. A patent attorney in Brisbane sent me this great YouTube video of a mythical (fake) app, called “The App App”. The idea behind this app is that users can pitch their app idea to the app, and the app spits back its assessment as to whether the idea has merit. Following on from the Australian Association of Angel Investors Conference last week, here is some data out of the USA on American angel investors. The average angel investor in the U.S.A. is 47 years old, is worth $750,000, makes $90,000 a year, invests in one out of every 10 deals he sees, shovels $37,000 into each deal, and lives in California. The top industry for both number of angel deals and dollars invested is the “internet” industry, followed by healthcare. Sir Tim Berners-Lee will be presenting a lecture at Griffith University (Gold Coast campus) on Saturday 2nd February 2013. Sir Tim is credited with inventing the World Wide Web after creating the very first web page while working at CERN in 1989. The lecture is part of Tim’s TBL Downunder Tour, and will be the only stop in Queensland during his visit.
