Got an idea you want to convert into a business in a weekend? Want to learn more about startups and how to launch a successful business? Want to have a heap of fun?
What is Startup Weekend?
Startup Weekend is a global grassroots movement of active and empowered entrepreneurs who are learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures. These events are run around the world in over 100 countries. Full details are here: http://goldcoast.startupweekend.org/
Basically the weekend is all about the process of turning an idea into a business. Anyone can attend. Anyone can pitch an idea. Everyone then votes on the best ideas and forms teams around them. By the end of the weekend the teams then pitch their new business to a panel of judges to win prizes.
It’s a great way to learn entrepreneurial skills and the steps to launch a startup, while also having a heap of fun. Whether entrepreneurs found companies, find a cofounder, meet someone new, or learn a skill far outside their usual 9-to-5, everyone is guaranteed to leave the event better prepared to navigate the chaotic but fun world of startups.
Startup Weekend Gold Coast runs from 6pm Friday 19 July to 10pm Sunday 21 July.
We also have a child minding creche running on the Saturday and Sunday if you want to bring your kids.
The event kicks off at 6pm on Friday 19th July. Have a drink, socialise and settle in. Then we kick off the formal proceedings at about 7pm. Friday night is all about pitching an idea and forming teams. Each person that wants to pitch gets 1 minute to pitch their idea. Anyone can pitch an idea, and it doesn’t have to be for a tech product. Ideas should be new to you, not something you have done any previous work on. Many attendees simply come up with an idea on the night. There are no presentations allowed – you simply stand and use the mic to tell people what your idea is.
Everyone then gets a chance to meet the idea founders and vote on the ideas they like. The ideas that have the most votes will be selected, and everyone then forms teams around those ideas.
Saturday and Sunday is then spent building the businesses. This means going out in the street and finding customers, building websites, designing the product, building the product, validating the idea, talking with mentors, and even making sales and earning revenue.
Mentors such as tech gurus, entrepreneurs and business coaches will float around and assist each team.
On Sunday night each team gets 5 minutes to present their business for judging. This presentation can include power point slides, video, live apps, etc. Judges then make their decision and prizes are awarded.
All meals are provided. We supply the venue, desks, and internet. We supply the mentors.
You should bring a laptop or tablet (if you have one). If you are a developer or designer then bring your “tools of the trade”.
